The past year has been a rather full and exciting time here at the Wellesley. We’ve learned a lot on some special training courses, welcomed new staff members and celebrated 25 years of Quintus owning the practice with a fantastic open day event in October. Here’s a look back at our year:
We became Certified Guided Biofilm Therapy Providers
Back in January, 8 members of our team took part in some specialist training here at the practice, in order to become certified practitioners of Guided Biofilm Therapy, using our amazing EMS AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master machine.
Developed in Switzerland, the EMS machine is a highly sophisticated piece of equipment that offers a unique pain-free solution for treating teeth and gums, via a gentle process called Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). It really is an amazing piece of dental technology and we are all very excited to be able to offer this treatment to our patients, to help you all keep your mouths in tip-top condition. You can see from some of our recent reviews that all of our patients are absolutely loving the new level of clean that we are able to offer.
The team had a lot of fun practicing GBT techniques on each other, under the watchful eye of trainer Lottie. At the end of the day they all came away with certificates and wonderfully clean and fresh smiles.
We said goodbye to hygienist Sarah and welcomed Rachael to the team
In March we were sad to say goodbye to Sarah Cooke our hygienist who retired after almost 15 years working at the Wellesley in a career spanning 35 years working as a dental hygienist.
But with every ending comes a new beginning and we were also excited to welcome new hygienist Rachael Shaw. Rachael was looking forward to getting stuck into her new role as she loves meeting new people and seeing positive results in their oral health.
We celebrated National Smile Month
From May 16th – June 16th we celebrated National Smile Month. A month filled with events and activities to help raise awareness of the important issues surrounding oral health, organised by dental charity, the Oral Health Foundation.
This year’s National Smile Month theme was ‘Everyone Deserves a Healthy Smile.’ Each week they looked at a different topics aimed at raising awareness of oral health issues and some of the things that both practitioners and patients can do to make sure that everyone has the healthy smile they deserve.
We refreshed our CPR and medical training
Our ongoing commitment to our patients includes regularly refreshing and updating both our equipment and our skills, so in August the team took part in some CPR and Medical Emergency Training here at the practice to make sure our first aid skills are all up to date.
A trainer from Wimbledon First Aid Training – who specialise in delivering medical courses to healthcare professionals and other specific groups – came to the practice with a range of high-tech training equipment to deliver their BLS/AED and Medical Emergencies course designed specifically for dental practices. The course is tailored for dentists, dental nurses and other dental team members, to enable them to deal with both life threatening and common medical emergencies in the practice.
During the three hours of training we were continuously assessed by the trainer and although it is of course, a very serious subject, we really enjoyed ourselves too! The trainer also reviewed our emergency drugs box and medical equipment and once the course was completed everyone got a certificate to mark their achievement. Hopefully we won’t every have to use any of the techniques we learned any time soon – but it is reassuring for our patients to know that they are in very safe hands and surrounded by qualified first aiders every time they visit the Welllesley.
We celebrated 25 years in business with a special open day
Can you believe it’s 25 years since our lead dentist, Quintus Germishuys took on the Wellesley Dental Practice? To celebrate this fantastic achievement we had a really wonderful open day at the Practice on Friday 14th October.
It was brilliant to be able catch up with so many patients and meet some new faces whilst celebrating our achievements together. We held demonstrations of some of our equipment – including our Airflow GBT machine – with some great special offers and discounts on Invisalign, Enlighten Whitening and Airflow GBT treatments available on the day too. We also had some delicious cake and party food and took some time to chat to people about all of the things that we do here at the practice, that make it such a fun and interesting place to work.
We observed Mouth Cancer Action Month
November was Mouth Cancer Actin Month. Since the Oral Health Foundation started this event back in 2000, they have invested nearly £2 million in improving awareness and education around mouth cancer and have no doubt saved countless lives.
There are three key things you can do to reduce you cancer risk:
- Know how to spot mouth cancer early and check regularly for unusual changes in your mouth.
- Understand what is likely to cause mouth cancer and how to reduce your risk.
- Act quickly when you see something out of the ordinary by visiting your dentist.

Reflecting on 2022
Looking back it has been a very busy, interesting and fun-filled year! We would like to thank all of our patients for sticking with us. We are already planning our next special open day event which will be taking place in March 2023, so keep an eye on our social media for some special announcements about that.
